The Indian healthcare industry ranks second globally in cyber attacks, according to cybersecurity firm CloudSEK. In 2021, India experienced 7.7% of total attacks on the healthcare sector, amounting to over 71 lakh compromised records. Technological advancements, including remote health monitoring and electronic health records, have increased the vulnerabilities that cybercriminals exploit. CloudSEK’s data shows a significant increase in attacks in the first four months of 2022. Australia and Thailand were the most targeted countries globally, with millions of records compromised.
According to cybersecurity intelligence firm CloudSEK, the Indian healthcare industry experienced the second-highest number of cyber attacks worldwide. In 2021, approximately 7.7% of total cyberattacks targeting the healthcare sector occurred in India.
CloudSEK’s report titled “Increased Cyber Attacks on the Global Healthcare Sector” highlighted that the United States faced 28% of the total global attacks on the healthcare industry.
The report revealed that India recorded the second-highest number of attacks, accounting for 7.7% of the total attacks on the healthcare industry in 2021. This translates to over 71 lakh records being compromised.
CloudSEK, which provides cyber threat intelligence to the Indian cybersecurity watchdog CERT-In, emphasized that technological advancements in the healthcare industry, such as remote health monitoring, electronic health records, and the Internet of Things (IoT), have created additional opportunities for cybercriminals to target the sector.
Furthermore, CloudSEK’s data indicates that there have already been 1.87 lakh compromised records in the first four months of 2022.
On a global scale, the dynamics of cyber attacks have shifted in 2022. Australia ranks as the most heavily targeted country, with approximately 70 crore records compromised. Thailand follows closely, having experienced over 10 crore records compromised in the first four months of 2022, as stated in the report.
